The Project
In towns across the country in Spring of 2018, we set up an interactive street display with the goal of encouraging people to take action themselves in creating a healthier environment, one small step at a time.
The display consisted of a large backdrop with free verse about how the earth is suffering as a result of human action (see image of final display below). Next to the verses are elements of nature to further illustrate the reality of each situation explained. In our modern culture, we are far removed from the negative effects of our actions. This display illustrates the connectedness of people and the environment, and highlights that human action often causes harm to the earth and all living things.
Next to the large backdrop was a tree with a mirror hanging from the branches. This mirror was a visual aid to participants so that they could view themselves as the change. It's easy to blame large corporations or governments for unsustainable decisions, but responsibility lies within each person to act when there is injustice. This is our home, so we must be good stewards of the earth and of each other to have a chance of a sustainable future. Next to this tree was a stack of blank leaves made of construction paper. On a leaf, each participant wrote an action they vowed to incorporate into their daily life to make the world a better place through stewardship, and they hung this leaf on one of the branches on the tree with the mirror.

Several passers-by talked with us and took photos of the display. We collected the leaves with meaningful vows from people in each city where we stopped to set up: Santa Cruz, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Gallup, NM, Fayetteville, AR, Springfield, MO, Dubuque, IA, Indianapolis, IN, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, PA, and Buffalo, NY. Click here to read about the road trip, amazing interactions and vows of change from the trip.
Many people were challenged and inspired by the information on our display to be intentionally respectful of the earth, and made vows of change to transform their habits and live sustainably. The trip was an incredible experience and an official start to Branching Together and our mission of empowering people through knowledge and products to become better stewards of the earth and of each other.
